Games like Ninja Gaiden/Resident Evil 4

I haven't played the other resident evils, but the two games mentioned in the title have really struck me with the way the weapons upgrade as you progres, combined with relatively intense/hard moments, and a polished game. Are there any other games that have the same features as these two games? I really really like the weapon upgrading, and if you compare the two, you can see TONS of similarity. Games like Ninja Gaiden/Resident Evil 4

Devil May Cry, God of War.

DMC3.
Mass Effect, though not nearly as intense as Ninja Gaiden/RE4, well maybe actually but in an entirely different way.
I would agree with Mass Effect. Even though it's not as action packed as Ninja Gaiden, it's still a fun game. I just never thought of Resident Evil 4 as an intense game... Definitely has it's moments, though.
